A PARTNERSHIP TO ADDRESS THE RACIAL BIAS IN OXIMETRY
EMPOWERED BY
OUR MISSION
To raise awareness about the racial inequality that exists in diagnostic tools and offer an inclusive solution.
Traditional finger pulse oximeters are life saving devices. Especially if you are white.
On black and brown skin however, they aren't always as accurate, because of the way light interacts with melanin.
This means that black people are up to 3x more likely to receive inadequate oxygen based on inaccurate readings from the very device that is meant to monitor their vitals.
RESULTS THAT SHOW
A STAGGERING DIFFERENCE
Traditional oximeters have been shown to overestimate oxygen saturation by up to 4% in black and brown skin.
This discrepancy is the difference between staying in hospital on oxygen therapy or being discharged and sent home.
LEVERAGING THE EAR CANAL
WHERE ALL SKIN LOOKS THE SAME
The ear canal is the perfect location to take accurate readings of oxygen saturation, heart rate and blood pressure across all races.
By partnering with institutions across the health landscape, Airquity is aiming to deliver the first race-agnostic, core oximeter that addresses an issue first documented over 30 years ago.
This intervention could save the lives of thousands of black people. It addresses the existing racial bias in pulse oximeters and offers a solution that leverages the only place on the body all skin looks the same – the ear canal.
